| In the modern era the computer is regarded as the most technically advanced machine frequently used worldwide. It is a tremendous help to people in every field of life. It is of great importance in medicine, aviation, science and technology, finance etc. We use it to keep in touch with our friends and relatives, to find data we need at a swit rate, to meet new people, to explore the world around us, to keep informed about home and foreign affairs etc. So, the computer has a very essential function in our everyday life. Since it is able to fulfill countless functions at the same time, it has a very sophisticated organization. Two basic words are commonly used when the computer is talked about: hardware and software. Hardware contains practically all devices on the computer, such as the motherboard with the CPU, the power supply, the video display controller, the removable media devices (floppy disc, CD-ROM Drive/Writer, DVD-ROM Drive/Writer), the internal storing devices (for example, hard disk), the sound card, the external components of a computer system (output and input devices). Hardware is something you can see and touch, as the devices exist in the physical world. For the hardware devices to function together an appropriate software is required to control the functionality of the devices. If compared to hardware, software has no material form and includes programmes, data, protocols and so on and so forth. Software is commonly located on the hard disk and is invoked by the operating system to perform certain functions. Device drivers are computer programs which are intended for interaction with the hardware devices. A driver typically interacts with a hardware device through the computer bus or communications subsystem to which hardware is connected. As soon as a calling programme invokes a routine in the driver, the driver gives orders to the device. When the device sends back data to the driver, it can invoke routines in the calling program. By and large, the driver is designed to simplify programming by functioning as an abstraction layer between a hardware device and an application or the OS which uses it. So, it depends upon hardware and is operating system-specific. The words software and firmware have a lot in common and can be interchangeable sometimes. In fact, firmware is a specific type of software that supervises low-level operations in a hardware device without which a device cannot function. Taking into consideration the above mentioned we can conclude that hardware and software make up a complete unit and, thus, cannot work separately. |
